At 11:02 a.m., August 9th, 1945, Nagasaki was devastated by an atomic bomb. 74,000 people were killed in the explosion and a further 75,000 suffered injuries. Even today, 68 years after the bombing, many people are suffering from illnesses caused by the aftereffects of the bomb. The citizens of Nagasaki have continuously engaged in conveying the reality of the atomic bombing and appealing for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Currently, there is an international movement towards establishing an International Law to ban nuclear weapons from the perspective of their inhumanity. We welcome this movement and believe our efforts have contributed to this momentum. In order to realize a world without nuclear weapons, we need join forces to build on this momentum, overcoming differences in countries and ages. Through the "Nagasaki Day", I hope that the citizens of Germany will share our wish for peace and spread the voice calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. In closing, I extend my best wishes for the good health and happiness to all participants Tomihisa Taue (Mayor of Nagasaki) Tomihisa Taue ist Bürgermeister von Nagaski (Japan) |
