The ongoing discussion about European or even German nuclear weapons is frightening and extremely dangerous. We unequivocally reject any notions surrounding European or German nuclear weapons, and demand an immediate end to this reckless and pointless debate for the following reasons:

  1. The Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as well as the Two Plus Four Agreement prohibit Germany from possessing its own nuclear weapons. The NPT signed by all EU states further makes EU-nuclear weapons impossible. The call for an EU or German bomb undermines international law and the international order.
  2. Additional nuclear weapons and new nuclear powers would lead to more states striving for their own nuclear arsenals. Uncontrollable nuclear proliferation would ensue, thereby jeopardizing everyone’s safety even more, as the risk of deployment would be drastically increased!
  3. Anyone calling for more nuclear weapons is recklessly accepting the catastrophic humanitarian and ecological impacts of their use! As we know from the history of nuclear weapons deployment and testing the effects on both people and the environment are devastating!

No more pointless and dangerous debates about an EU and German nuclear bomb! We firmly oppose these ideas and instead call for strong measures to reduce nuclear risks. The international community must return to the path of diplomacy as opposed to one of confrontation and armament. This also implies that Europe and Germany must support the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Only a world free of nuclear weapons is a safe world!

The signature campaign will run until the EU elections on June 9. Afterwards, we will inform the new members of the EU Parliament about this appeal.
