What is going on in the US

Americans are organising across the country to end the war under slogans such as "justice, not war", "our grief is not a cry for war" and "not in our name" (see NGO statements:
http://www.ipb.org/selected_statements_from_NGOs.htm). A coalition of all the major peace groups, including Women`s International League for Peace and Freedom (http://www.wilpf.org/), War Resisters League, American Friends Service Committee (http://www.afsc.org), Fellowship of Reconciliation, Black Radical Congress, Global Exchange, Peace Action (http://www.webcom.com/peaceact/), Veterans for Peace, Pax Christi and others has formed the National Coalition for Peace and Justice (http://www.warresisters.org/oct7_2001.htm).

Its first "National Day of Action for Peace" on 7 October was marked with large demonstrations in New York and elsewhere. More Days of Action are planned on a monthly basis (
http://www.afsc.org/news/2001/PB-100201N.htm). The AFSC and Fellowship of Reconciliation have also launched a national education and action campaign for "No more victims" (http://www.afsc.org/nomore.htm), which is coordinating numerous regional events.

Actions to oppose the Star Wars programme and the war in Central Asia (join the call for peace, no more violence, no more war!) will take place in all major and some smaller American cities on 13 October, coordinated by Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space (
http://www.space4peace.org; http://www.pax.protest.net/Peace/October13th.html).

In addition, the major peace groups and numerous other groups like Voices in Wilderness (
http://www.nonviolence.org/vitw/) are using their national networks to promote thousands of local and individual actions, such as weekly vigils, teach-ins, media work, letter-writing, petitions. There are also action networks in major cities and on university campuses (many regional events are listed on http://www.warresisters.org/demos.htm; http://www.pax.protest.net/; http://www.iacenter.org).

Canadian organising

In Canada, the newly formed "September Eleventh Peace Coalition" including major unions, the Council of Canadians, and large peace groups (
http://www.canadians.org/media/media-011005.html) will organise a national campaign opposing the war as immoral and counterproductive and working for peace and global social justice. There are also strong city and university coalitions, many building on the grassroots anti-globalisation networks already in place, are organising rallies and carrying out public education. Other national grassroots initiatives include the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade`s online A Global Appeal for No More Violence (http://www.canadians.org/media/media-011005.html) which has received about 15.000 signatures from over 100 countries and the Cross Canada Caravan of Peace (http://www.crosscanadapeaceproject.ca/) which delivered a gigantic petition for peace to Parliament on 25 September.
