Press Release on the Terror Attack in the United States on September 11, 2001

The Terror Attack in the United States

Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF)

The board of directors, members, volunteers, and employees of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ASRP) are appalled and stunned by the murderous and criminal attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon

We morn the victims of this horrendous attack. We give our utmost sympathy to the relatives of the dead and injured. With our thoughts we stand on the side of our project partners, the volunteers in the United States, and for those who feel threatened and their life in danger because of this occurrence. Regardless of who is responsible for the attack yesterday, because of the current world-political situation it is clear that especially members of the Jewish community feel threatened and are traumatized. Our compassion and our solidarity go out to them.

This attack of a such an unimaginable extreme makes clear the consequences of an absolutely inhumane and terroristic frame of mind, for which an understanding and justification is not possible.

With the unspeakable and helpless rage and sadness of the attack we ask everyone who is militarily and politically responsible, that his or her reaction be not set on revenge, as the term "declaration of war" suggests. There can be no doubt that the organizers and the men who stood behind the attack must be punished to the harshest degree. But we hope that the answer to this unfathomable terror will not include collective retaliatory measures. These measures always effect the innocent and do not break the escalation of violence, but instead only increases it. Such an escalation of violence in not in the interest of peace, democracy, the rule of law, humanity, and justice in the world. Therefore we ask all people, who have these values in their hearts, in spite of the pain and justified anger, to seek reasonable and balanced decisions and to push for civil forms of reaction. Only in this way will we be able to set a sign against the terror and serve the goals of peace, which we now so strive for in this situation.
